Hello! We’re so excited that you want to give pole dancing a try, and we hope it’s the start of a new passion for you! Here is how to get started:
Step 1: Set up an account with MindBody
MindBody is the booking system that we use to manage class registrations, whether that is for a 6-week pole dance course or for one of our drop-in classes. You can either register through this website, or you can download the free app onto your phone. I recommend getting the app for your phone using the button below. It’s very convenient to book into classes that way, or to cancel a booking if you need to. It will ask for your information, as well as get you to sign our waiver form.
You can also pay for classes through MindBody using a credit card (unfortunately they don’t take Visa Debit cards) and you can enter that information during account setup, or you can leave that part blank and pay via an e-transfer to the studio. Either way, we’ll need you to set up your MindBody account first so everyone does need to complete this step. We aren’t a big enough studio to need front desk staff (yet!), so we don’t have office hours for people to come in and register/pay in person.
If you already have a MindBody account (a few places in Nanaimo use them, including Modo Yoga, Crossfit Nanaimo, and Oxygen Yoga & Fitness) then you can use the same one to book classes at Luxe! From the app’s home page use the search bar at the top of the screen to search for Luxe Studios, then you can add us to your favourites and view the schedule.
Step 2: Choose a class
Okay so we’ve got a MindBody account set up, now we can register for a class. What do you take first?
If you’ve never tried pole dance ever before and you want to try it out first then I highly recommend starting with a Trial Class. It’s $15+tax, 45 minutes long, and gives you an idea of how the classes are structured. You are not required to take the Trial Class first before signing up for Level 1, but many people like to. Upcoming Trial Classes are:
- Wednesday at 7:30pm on October 16th – WAITLIST ONLY
- Sunday at 4:15pm on November 3rd
Beginner Pole Dance Classes
If you’ve done the Trial Class or are just super keen on signing up for the 6-week beginner course then you register for our Level 1 class! They are 6-week progressive courses, and they will be labeled with their start and end date. Make sure you are starting with the first week of class, it would pretty tough to jump in on week five! 6-Week courses are $90+tax, or we have memberships available as well (more info on those below). Upcoming Level 1 courses are:
- Mondays at 6:15pm starting October 28th – WAITLIST ONLY
- Thursdays at 7:30pm starting November 7th
- Sundays at 4:00pm starting November 17th
Drop-In/Cross Training classes: These are classes that don’t have a date range on them, meaning that the class is drop-in style as opposed to progressive and you can start attending at any time. Please note you still need to register for these classes ahead of time, both to make sure that you get a space and to make sure that there are enough students to run them. Drop-In classes are $15+tax individually, or we have punch cards available which reduces the price per class.
Decide Whether a Membership or Course Works for You
I get this question a lot: what’s the difference between the courses and the memberships?
Courses: Although it is labeled as a ‘pole course’ when booking online, think of it as a 6 class digital punch card. You have 6 months to use the classes from the first one that you attend. Most people use all 6 in a row for their Levels 1 – 4 pole courses. We also have a 12 class option available. If you are attending 1 class a week, or a class every few weeks due to a variable work schedule then this is the most cost-effective option for you.
Membership: Memberships get you a set number of classes (we have 12, 20, or unlimited options), but you must use those classes within a 30 day period from the first one that you attend. So if you bought a membership and attended your first class on the 14th of the month, you would have until the 12th or 13th of the following month to use your remaining classes. If you want to attend more than one class per week, this is the lowest priced option and they start at $99+tax per month. There are no contracts, you pay month to month.
Which brings me to…
Cross-Training and Other Classes
These ones are the ‘drop-in’ classes that I was talking about above. Drop-in means that they are not a progressive and you can start attending them at any time. Right now we offer Exotic Dance 1 & 2, Conditioning, and Gymnastics. If you are really keen on learning pole dance beyond the beginner level I recommend the Balance & Conditioning class on Tuesdays, as well as Gymnastics on Thursdays. If you are waiting a few weeks for another Level 1 beginner course to start, these are great classes to take in the interim to give yourself a leg-up on your pole training.
Our Exotic Dance classes and Spin Pole Combos classes have some pre-requisites:
- Exotic Dance Level 1: I recommend having completed at least three classes of Level 1 pole before attending this class, you will need to understand the basics of momentum and pole safety.
- Exotic Dance Level 2: Not equivalent to Pole Level 2, this is for students at Level 4 and up! Must be comfortable with climbing and inversions. You will be working on learning a whole routine over 4 weeks so they do have start and end dates.
- Spin Pole Combos: Must be comfortable with aerial inversions (Level 4 and up).
Whether you attend our cross-training classes or lift weights at the gym, we definitely recommend doing complementary off-the-pole training if you are wanting to move up to the more advanced levels of pole dance!
